Advocacy

Much of the work of the Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles is to ensure that once mothers have made the decision to breastfeed their infants, the barriers to successful breastfeeding are as few as possible. Some barriers to breastfeeding, for instance, may include hospital policies that impede breastfeeding, health insurance non-coverage of breastfeeding services and pumps, and work environments that do not allow mothers the time and space necessary to express their breastmilk.

The Breastfeeding Task Force, working with community partners, has championed legislation that would mandate HMO coverage of breastfeeding services and pumps, as well as legislation that would require state agencies to inform pregnant women about current lactation accommodation laws.
