Polk County Public Health and Times Report
The Crookston Sports Center (CSC) recently transformed an empty hall into an inviting space for breastfeeding families. The designated lactation room is a private and comfortable space that has a rocking chair, a table, electrical outlets, a changing table and is located near the bathrooms.
Mothers are encouraged to breastfeed anytime and anywhere at CSC, protected by the Breastfeeding Anytime, Anywhere Minnesota Act. Providing a dedicated space for breastfeeding is one thing community spaces can do to help breastfeeding mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals.
Community members are invited to attend the grand opening ceremony on Thursday, March 10 at 9 a.m. at the Crookston Sports Center for coffee, juice, fruit and muffins to celebrate the new space. Attendees are asked to park in the main parking lot and enter through the main doors, following the balloons and signs to the nursing room.
“The prevalence of designated lactation spaces in public places for pumping and breastfeeding has increased in recent years, including workplaces, schools, airports, federal buildings and community centers,” said PCPH in a press release. “The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership, which includes breastfeeding as a healthy eating strategy, and Polk County Public Health (PCPH) staff assisted in furnishing the breastfeeding room.”
Tammy Conn, PCPH Staff, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) said, “We have been delighted to help provide comfort to the families who use this room; having a private, clean, and distraction-free space is ideal in a community setting. Local and visiting families will appreciate having the choice, knowing breastfeeding can happen anytime, anywhere.
Any family that needs a distraction-free space would be welcome to use this designated room. It is located near the concessions behind the press box on the second floor of the CSC and will be available at community and sporting events during normal business hours.
