Campus lactation rooms available for the UTHSC community

The Human Resources Lactation Room, located at 910 Madison Ave., Suite 100, provides comfort for nursing mothers who need a space to express their milk.

Three breastfeeding rooms are now available on campus, providing a private space for all breastfeeding mothers at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.

Originally developed by the Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (IOED) and Human Resources in 2018, two lactation rooms served the needs of working mothers on campus. A third was added later.

“These lactation rooms allow mothers to express their milk privately, especially if they don’t have space in their office to do so.” said Abigail Caritan, MA, Senior Administrative Associate, Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (IOED).

Lactation Rooms are a great resource and dedicated space for breastfeeding mothers returning to campus.

The rooms are located:

  • At the Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity, 920 Madison Ave., Suite 825. The room is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The IOED lactation room includes a microwave, mini fridge, spare pumping bags and a Medela pump (please bring your own). The room is accessible through the IOED front door, and an associate will be present to direct nursing mothers.
  • At Human Resources, located at 910 Madison Ave., Suite 753. The room is available Monday through Friday during regular business hours. If there is no one available in Human Resources to access it, a room key can be found at UT Federal Credit Union, 910 Madison Ave., Suite 100.
  • At Student Academic Support Services and Inclusion (SASSI), 8 S. Dunlap, GEB, Room BB9 The Lactation Room is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. through the badge entrance in room CB18 or go to the main SASSI office for assistance.

No appointment is required to access the lactation rooms, however, nursing mothers can call IOED at 901.448.2122, Human Resources at 901.448.5601, and SASSI at 901.448.5056 ahead of time to access a room.

Campus lactation rooms are open to the UTHSC community.

“Our goal is primarily to remind the campus of the presence of lactation rooms and their availability on campus for staff, students, faculty and visitors,” said Debbie Long, human resources benefits associate. “We want to help meet the needs of working moms by giving them a comfortable place to pump.”
