DOH-Miami-Dade and Partners Celebrate National Breastfeeding Month with 2021 BreastfeedMIAMI and The Art of Breastfeeding

Miami, Florida – In recognition of National Breastfeeding Month, the Florida Department of Health’s WIC program in Miami-Dade County and local partners will host 2021 BreastfeedMIAMI. This year’s theme— Breastfeeding: at every stage emphasizes the importance of ‘continuity of care’, emphasizing that breastfeeding is the foundation of good health throughout life for mothers, fathers and the family unit.

Together, this extraordinary collaboration aims to educate, support and promote breastfeeding with the goal of supporting the health of babies and children within our community. Breastfeeding is recognized as the normative way of feeding infants, and it is well known that infants who are breastfed for 6 months and beyond have significant lifelong health benefits over those who are not.

Weekly National Breastfeeding Month celebrations and themes include:

Week 1 – World Breastfeeding Week, Protecting Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility

Week 2 – Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, Feeding our future

Week 3 – Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Asian Native American Week, Reclaiming our traditions

Week 4 – Black Breastfeeding Week, The Big Break: Collective Rest for Collective Power

In honor of August, National Breastfeeding Month, BreastfeedMIAMI 2021 hosted several community-wide events: Colors of Breastfeeding, The Virtual Big Latch On and the first-ever, one-of-a-kind, Breastfeeding art.

What: The Art of Breastfeeding is an artistic and visual exhibition showcasing the beauty and diversity of breastfeeding, pump feeding and breastfeeding among mothers, fathers and family members. various family backgrounds and ethnicities. All families are welcome and encouraged to participate. The event and parking are FREE. There will be resources, prizes, and refreshments available. Free backpacks for the first 50 students. A busy day for the whole family.
