A new series of breastfeeding lessons, covering the early days through to the end of your breastfeeding journey, has been launched by NursingMama.ie.
The first of its kind to launch in Ireland, this new service allows parents to take NursingMama.ie classes at their own pace and from the comfort of their own home.
Everything expectant parents need to know is now broken down into simple, easy-to-understand videos so they can feel empowered and confident through the breastfeeding journey.
The ‘Breastfeeding Preparation and Beyond’ or ‘Weaning from Breastfeeding’ courses can be purchased individually (€79 and €59) or as a package (€125) – The Complete Breastfeeding Journey.
NursingMama.ie was founded in 2021 by Kildare lactation consultant Katie Mugan. With over 20 years of experience as a general and pediatric registered nurse, Katie established her own private practice after earning the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant designation in 2019.
With her extensive experience in the community, Katie saw many parents feel anxious and overwhelmed, uncertain about breastfeeding, and was passionate about sharing her knowledge to help them succeed and thrive over the course of these first steps.
Through her nursingmama.ie platform, she has designed unique prenatal supports in the form of breastfeeding preparation, newborn care classes and a breastfeeding weaning workshop; which has been a huge success and allows mothers to end their breastfeeding journey in a gentle and positive way.
For the first time in Ireland, these services are now available on demand.
“I have seen a huge increase in demand for my breastfeeding classes. This on-demand service is ideal for those who live abroad or have a busy schedule and find it difficult to attend my classes Now everyone can still be part of the Nursing Mama community,” Katie said.
“Everything expectant parents need to know is now broken down into simple, easy-to-understand videos so they can feel empowered and confident through the breastfeeding journey. Not only do members receive a lifetime membership, but they can also access my own private Facebook group and meet like-minded mums. I will be hosting a bi-monthly live Q&A session for each class. Members will have the opportunity to answer individual questions and comment. learn a lot of advice, not only from me, but also from their peers.”
Katie, who is based in the Naas area and covers Kildare and Dublin for in-person consultations, explained that the videos feature live positioning and locking demonstrations, while there are also downloadable PDFs. There are five to six modules in each course.
“I find that a lot of my clients maybe go into breastfeeding thinking maybe a bit naively that because it’s being talked about as the natural thing, it’s going to be easy, and natural doesn’t automatically mean that. So it’s a skill that has to be learned,” she said.
“We know that education leads to better outcomes, more positive outcomes for parents, in those early days and weeks. So having the education beforehand leads to a more positive journey for mom and less stress because we all know those first few days and weeks are stressful at the best of times, but if we have a little knowledge we know when things are going great, or maybe when things are not going so well where and when to get help.
