The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is working to build and prepare the capacity of breastfeeding counselors in Qatar under the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. In this context, the Ministry of Health organized a one-week workshop to train health practitioners specialized in counseling on the skills needed to support mothers and their children in optimal breastfeeding.
The workshop, which was attended by specialists from the Ministry of Public Health, Women’s Health and Research Center, Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hospital, Primary Health Care Corp and Sidra Medicine, aimed to support, encourage and protect breastfeeding through training healthcare providers on the importance of counseling and supporting mothers about breastfeeding.
At the event, skills of six trainers who obtained a certificate (training of trainers), in addition to the training of 24 participants of health care providers in the field of breastfeeding. Hands-on experiences were conducted for the participants through cooperation with Itqan – Center for Clinical Simulation and Innovation, which plays a fundamental and educational role with the aim of improving the quality of care through the use of technology state-of-the-art facility for medical care and medical training for current and future healthcare professionals in Qatar.
The workshop included presentations, panel discussions, in addition to field trips for participants to the Women’s Welfare and Research Center (WWRC) to apply the training in the field, where the new mothers were interviewed. and received essential breastfeeding advice and information and offered the necessary support. for them. Dr. Salah Abdulla Alyafei, Acting Head of Health Promotion and Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Public Health, said the workshop is part of the implementation of the Hospitals Initiative Baby Friendly, launched by WHO and Unicef in 1991 with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing the health of pregnant women and new mothers and their babies, noting that the MoPH is committed to implementing implementing this initiative since 2016 with the aim of increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for children under six months in the State of Qatar.
The workshop complements the training course (training of trainers) for practitioners operating in the field of breastfeeding counseling organized by the Ministry of Public Health in 2019 in cooperation with WHO with the aim to build and prepare the capacity of breastfeeding counselors in Qatar. .
