The Ventura Youth Correctional Facility (VYCF) unveiled a new, updated lactation room last month.
Federal, state, and local laws stipulate the provision of a lactation room; however, it was a labor of love for Cynthia Brown, VYCF Youth Administrator and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Coordinator, to ensure staff have access to a space designed with a relaxing comfort and secluded privacy.
VYCF staff like LVN Kaitlin Exarchos, who will soon be welcoming a baby girl, are thrilled to use the updated lactation room and greatly appreciate Brown’s efforts.
One of Ventura’s staff psychologists will also soon be using the newly renovated lactation room.
Brown galvanized talented staff like EEO Coordinator, Lt. Mark Gross, SYCC Kellin Mills, maintenance staff, commercial services, health and safety manager Seth Hawkins and young DJJs. Together they cleaned, painted and reconfigured the designated space in the VYCF administration building. They also added new furniture, a refrigerator and stylish rugs.
On November 18, an unveiling took place featuring an oil painting of a child, donated by the Hawkins family estate for the new room, dedicated in Brown’s name, honoring his efforts.
