SAN ANTONIO (August 11, 2022) – August kicks off National Breastfeeding Month and San Antonio Metro Health highlights breastfeeding support programs and provides information and resources to families at events in San Antonio this month here, see the list of events below.

San Antonio Metro Health WIC along with its Lactation Support Center, Healthy Start and Healthy Neighborhoods come together to celebrate the World Breastfeeding Alliance theme ‘Intensify Breastfeeding: Educate and Support’ – a call for all people to come together to support, promote and protect breastfeeding and breastfeeding mothers and babies.

San Antonio Metro Health Director Claude A. Jacob stressed the importance of providing breastfeeding education and awareness, especially to pregnant women. “Our programs encourage breastfeeding as an integral and natural part of raising a healthy child,” he said. “As a public health organization, we embrace and recognize the health benefits that breastfeeding plays in early childhood development.”

Successful breastfeeding requires teamwork to support new moms. Metro Health WIC offers mom-to-mom support, one-to-one counseling, local support groups, and educates moms about the texas law which allows women to breastfeed anywhere in public. In 2019, a new law was passed allowing women in Texas to express their breast milk anywhere in public.

At Metro Health’s San Antonio Lactation Support Center, mothers can get help from International Board-certified lactation consultants and/or a registered nurse who offer one-on-one consultations, breastfeeding classes, and support groups. No-cost support for parents in San Antonio, with no income eligibility requirements.

Despite the recommendation to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months, less than half of infants in Texas are exclusively breastfed until three months of age. Awareness and support from parents and the community are essential first steps in enabling mothers to breastfeed.
